"From today onwards, we will be called Meta," Zuckerberg said while introducing Metaverse.
Zuckerberg presented the company's new logo, explaining that the word "meta" comes from the Greek word meaning "after."
He added that the name symbolizes the fact that you can always build something new.
He stated that the new brand focuses the company's attention on the "metaverse", where a person abandons screens and experiences the impact of being in virtual reality.
Immediately after Zuckerberg's announcement, data showed that Facebook shares rose about 3 percent in light of the
company's renaming.
The shares rose 2.97 percent as of 21:30 Moscow time to $321.50 per share.
Facebook had earlier announced plans to create 10,000 jobs in the European Union over the next five years to help build "virtual reality universe" or metaverse.
